History of Dhoraji

The Darbargadh

Until the middle of the eighteenth century Dharoji was a part of the princely state of Junagarh. After that it was acquired by Kumbhoji II Haloji of Gondal State. To protect the state from the enemies a fort was built in 1755. Very soon a settlement grew around it.

Thus we see that, Dhoraji was first established as a fortified city. However, as peace returned to the region, the city began to spread beyond the fortified area.  It underwent further changes under Maharaja Bhagvat Singh Sahib, whose tenure extended from 14th February, 1869 to 10th March, 1944.

Maharaja Bhagvat Singh Sahib was an enlightened man with a degree from the University of Edinburgh. It may not be out of place to add that at the time of his father’s death he was only four years old and so he was a king in the name only. As he came to power, he overhauled the administrative system and undertook many welfare measures. He also introduced the concept of town planning and monitored the growth of important cities like Gondal, Dhoraji, Upleta and Patanvav.

Dhoraji underwent further improvement as railway was introduced to this part of the state. The area between railway station and the old city came to be known as New Dhoraji. It had broad avenues, parks and markets. Very soon Dhoraji began to be counted as one of the most beautiful cities in Saurashtra.

With GIDC setting up an estate here, Dhoraji has now become one of the industrial towns of Gujarat. Opening of roads and introduction of all other facilities required for a healthy and meaningful life has made Dhoraji a well known tourist destination in India.

Tourist Places in Dhoraji

Darbargadh in Dhoraji

Although Dhoraji is an industrial town, it has quite a few places of tourist interest. Among them we must first mention the Darbargardh located right inside the old fort:

The fort in Dhoraji was once surrounded by a massive wall with several bastions. There are also four large and three smaller gates leading into it. Among them:
  • Kathiawadi Darwaja is located in the east
  • Porbandar Gate is located in the west
  • Halar Gate is located in the north
  • Junagadh Gate is located in the south
  • The smaller gates are known as Bhimji Bari, Darbari Bari and Sati Bari

Darbargadh in Dhoraji is situated at the highest point of the town. It is approachable by the beautiful Darbari Gate, well adorned with pretty jharokas. The brackets that hold these jharokas resemble beautifully sculpted elephants. The Dabargadh itself is located on high plinth. It has been designed in the same architectural style as Navlakha Palace of Gondal. Its outer walls are adorned with complex geometric patterns. One can also see sculptures representing man and animals on these walls. Also take time admire its horizontal friezes, carved pillars, decorative kanguras and windows frames.

To the left of Darbargadh is the temple of Ashapura. It is an old but beautiful temple located inside the fort area. Also take time to visit Pani ki Kotha. With beautiful balconies on all four sides the structure looks more like a palace, but in reality it houses the pumping station and a huge water tank.

Some Other Places to Visit from Dhoraji

Also visit Upleta, another fortified town located on River Moj. It is situated at a distance of 19 km from Dhoraji. Take time to admire its mighty fort walls, bastions, gates and river ghats; all of them offer a picturesque view. You may also visit the Darbargadh; but it has now been turned into the city Police Station.

Other than Upleta, Kutiyana is another place to visit from Dhoraji.  It is located at a distance of 53 km from this town. The houses of the rich Memon traders offer a glimpse into their esthetic sense. There is also a beautiful mosque that represents the 19th century style of architecture.
